Butternut Health Report

If you have a Butternut tree on site – you must call in a professional before you begin your project. Our Certified Butternut Health Assessor is qualified to provide guidance and the required reports.

In 2007, the Butternut, Juglans cinerea, was deemed endangered by Environment Canada and is now managed by Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources recovery strategy. Our native population was devastated by an imported fungal canker that can be found in most remaining trees.

Our Butternut Health Assessor can provide guidance on what the implications are of having a Butternut tree – whether it is healthy, diseased, naturally occurring, a retainable or non-retainable tree. The permit process can be complicated but is required for any activities that might affect the health of a Butternut that has been deemed “retainable”. We will make recommendations and help develop and implement a mitigation plan.

Butternut trees cannot be legally cut or harmed without a permit. Call us for more information at 705-745-1803.
