Do I need a tree removal permit in the City of Peterborough?
In an effort to maintain our local tree canopy, the City of Peterborough requires a permit for tree removal. Any tree over 3 inches at diameter breast height (about the size of a pop can) qualifies and you may incur a fee ($50) if the tree is healthy and over 6″ DBH and will need to replant. But no need to fret – we will apply on your behalf and help you with all the details. For more information check out the city’s website.
What happens to the wood?
When quoting, it will be specified if you’d like the resulting wood left on your site, either in long pieces or in firewood lengths. If you choose to remove the wood, we have options! We may shred it in our wood chipper, offer it to our contacts if there is mill quality salvage, or bring it back to our yard to process into firewood. Nothing goes to waste!
When should tree pruning be done?
As long as the total canopy removed is under 30%, most tree trimming or pruning can be safely done at any time of the year. Typically a tree’s pruning cycle is 3 to 5 years to maintain a strong, healthy form, but type, size and health play a role in the cycle that will work best for your tree. Regularly monitoring your trees and providing consistent maintenance is the best way to ensure that they stay healthy for years to come.
How deep do you grind a stump?
We generally grind four to six inches below grade (ground level). This leaves ample space for planting a new tree, re-establishing lawn or adding to your garden. Stump grinding is a great way to remove stumps and roots with little to no impact to your property and you can finally stop cutting grass around that pesky stump!
